Chapter 8:

Martha and Audrey pull up in front of 'The Talon'.

"I'm sorry we have to go back in here today" Martha says. "I just have to run in these pies to Lana."

"Is it okay if I just wait out in the truck?" Audrey asks, a little nervous of running into Lionel again.

"Sure, I'll only be a minute" Martha says, climbing out of the truck, balancing several apple pies.

Audrey sits in the truck, watching the streetlights turn on as the sun fades away. She watches the people walk down the sidewalk, waiting for Martha to return.

Her keen nervous eyes catch Chloe and Clark coming down the street. Sure that Chloe will spot her in the truck, she hops out, heading for her hiding spot in 'The Talon' that worked fine before.

She swings through the front door, discovering the one time of day when 'The Talon' earns its keep. The customers, packed like cattle, don't like to give way to Audrey's shaking frame. It is, perhaps, odd that the sight of a high school student would shake her, but anonymity is the one weapon she has against the onslaught of Lionel Luthor, and Chloe announced her intentions to rob Audrey of that weapon the first night she arrived in town.

The safety of her hiding place seems miles away, when in fact it is at least twenty people away. She pushes through the crowd the best she can, but caffeine addicts donít like their orderly shuffle to coffee-induced-bliss interrupted.

    "Audrey!"

The sound of her name sends fear through her. She's been caught, and the owner of the shrill voice that has identified her just has to be an enemy. She wants to claw through the crowd to escape but she can't.

"I thought you were going to wait in the truck," Martha intones, placing her hand on her shoulder, hoping to calm her.

"I was, I just saw..." Audrey says breathless.

    "Who?"

"...someone I really donít want to talk to."

Martha frowns, knowing that the one person Audrey feared more than anything was that of Lionel Luthor. She knows the fear well as his voice has often sent the same shivers down her own spine. "I understand. It was a mistake coming back here today. Letís head on home," Martha points Audrey towards the front door.

"No, is there another way out?" Audrey asks, still looking for Chloe to come through the door.

Martha looks around, uncomfortable with having to having to hide another secret. "I suppose Lana wouldnít mind us going through the theater. It's this way, Audrey."

    "Ms. Peyton?"

Audrey could hear the voice but she couldn't believe it. That Luthor confidence was hard to miss, and it was coming from right behind her. Martha has a view over Audrey's shoulder, so Audrey can't help but look for the panic in Martha's eyes, knowing that she had finally been trapped.

But, Martha didnt look surprised, or fearful, in fact she looked relieved. How could that be? She knew what Lionel had done, and would continue to do if he knew Audrey was anywhere near...

"Lex!" Martha says with a smile.

A cloud of emotions fills Audrey's world, swirling through her head like a tornado, obliterating every rational thought that once resided peacefully there. The time it takes for her to turn her head to see him is but a second, but feels like a lifetime passes.

It's amazing, she had never noticed how much the son sounded like the father. The familiar Luthor tone able to invoke her greatest fears and most beautiful dreams. She was exhilarated it was the son.

Her heart leaped, feeling as though it was finally able to beat again, her innermost being only alive when near him.

"It's nice to finally meet you," Lex says, offering out his hand.

The tornado in her head consumes her, rain clouds obscuring her view of the world, and everything goes black sending her crashing to the floor like a bolt of lightning.
